Winter 2014 First Impressions

Excluding shows I haven’t seen the previous seasons of, and continuing series. Based off the list at AniChart

PV = Promotional Video

Absolute Duo

Seems like a fairly generic harem-y loli-y magic powers anime. The art isn’t awful so maybe it has some money behind it – that might go towards making it a decent show, like some others have managed to pull off. But the majority of these shows stay true to their purpose, so I don’t recommend spending any time on it – It probably won’t even be the echiiest of the season if that’s what you’re after either.

Ansatsu Kyoushitsu

I’ve read the manga (although I have fallen behind – I must catch up), but despite this I’m not super excited about going through the story again. I recommend you to pick it up, but I won’t be.

Binan Koukou Chikyuu Bouei-bu Love!

I feel like this show will either be brilliant, or fall into many cliché’d sections and rely on laughing at the characters rather than with them. I hope it pulls through though. On a side note, their animal companion is horrifying:

Based on the success of the Death Billiards OVA by Madhouse, the company has decided to expand into a TV series – and it’s not just billiards, there promises to be many sports that contestants will play. This should be a very good watch – keep a look out for it.

I haven’t watched any of the Precures yet – but the modern ones seem to be done really well (that being said I suspect the transformation may be in CG). While I won’t be checking out the series any time soon, there’s big expectations for this series from the usual fans.
I wouldn’t mind a good archery show – The lack of a proper PV and the producers – Arms (who do a lot of prunient shows, although they do have some hits) – makes me think it won’t be all that good however. I’ll try an episode or so to see what it’s like.
I’ve decided to wait until the Stardust Crusaders arc is over until I begin it. I think it should be complete after this season so I may take it up as an extra for Spring 2015.
Not sure – looks like it could be a charming little watch – they did squeeze in several boobs into the trailer though – but as long as its not an overly prominent feature – this could be okay

Juuou Mujin no Fafnir

Pretty sure I heard a ‘hentai’ from the narrator during the trailer and added to the cleavage in the video, I can safely say that this is one I can avoid.

Kantai Collection: Kan Colle

This has been coming out for the last 2 seasons – I still want to watch it, but I almost don’t care any more about it. Who knows if it will actually come out this time?

Koufuku Graffiti

There’s been some good buzz about this show, but the trailer seems awfully drab. From what I have gathered it’s a culinary show with reactions that are over the top – think volcanoes exploding after a spicy curry or bodies twisting into the shape of a pretzel. I’m not seeing any of that here. I’ll see if the hype continues and probably leave the show for the time being.

Rolling Girls looks decent. Nothing spectacular, but it comes a solid young studio who did Attack on Titan. The trailer doesn’t give much away, but it doesn’t look too bad. It’s obviously quite a different work that AoT, but I’m looking forward to it.

Saenai Heroine no Sodate-kata

or ‘How to raise a boring girlfriend’ – It seems a bit odd. The trailer seems to be creating a harem for the lead rather than for the target female. It looks well animated, but I won’t check it out unless I hear more about it from fans. Highly likely that it’s targetted at the harem audience though.

Seiken Tsukai no World Break

The fact that one of the girls gets a load of her clothes torn off in merely the trailer is never a good sign. It seems to be an Infinite Stratos style show, suit-enhanced and echii-based. It’ll probably be okay,  but I wouldn’t recommend it – it’ll be very similar to all the other shows.

Sengoku Musou

Set in Feudal Japan, the show is an adaptation of the Samurai Warriors game (similar to Dynasty Warriors), which while sometimes suffering from repeated plots – generally have good stories if not skipped over. A rule of thumb is to skip on series that promote a product, but this series could break the mould if it is written well.

Shinmai Maou no Keiyakusha

Alternatively ‘The testament of sister new devil’. This is another echii – enough said really.

Yoru no Yatterman

An action series which pits the Yattermen against the Doronbo. Again, the trailer doesn’t reveal much, but I get the feeling it won’t be as good as I was expecting it to be from the show cover art. It claims a face off of epic proportions, but can it deliver? The trailer has set me off a bit, but I’ll watch the first few episodes to make sure I’m not missing a hit

Yuri Kuma Arashi

I said earlier in the year through some medium (possibly Twitter), that Lesbian Bear Storm  was going to be the show to rule winter. And in some sense, I feel I am still correct about this. However, the show is starting to appear more smutty than I had thought. There must be some sort of plotline (I hope) with the bear thing, but promotional images and some symbolic scenes have belied my earlier impressions.

Schedules change a good bit, depending on which websites you check out, so I can’t guarantee that this is all the shows that have confirmed schedules.

General Overview:

Winter, like the previous season seems to be slim pickings this time round – this is a slight relief as it has been a while since I have delved into my backlog. I’m hopefully going to take out some old classics like Code Geass and finally tick them off my list. I can’t say I’m overly excited about anything bar Death Parade, so I may end up skipping the season completely in favour of some guaranteed quality shows.

I also have some leftovers from the fall season which are continuing through the Winter.

Definite Watches:

Death Parade

(And I recommend Ansatsu Kyoushitsu )
